Hi Darrell,
The 4 speed in my '69 Ambo with 61k miles on it whines quite loud. Sometimes I wonder how well pedestrians can hear it. Are they looking at me because of my fine looking old ride or to see what all that noise is? :-) I've never ridden another 4 speed equipped Loop so I can't say if mine is the norm or not. Hope to have my '71 on the road by late summer for comparison. I once tried Motul mineral based gear oil with moly in it ($12 a liter!) to see if it made any difference - it did for about 200 miles then it was just the same as the Bel-Ray I always use. But after I first filled the tranny with it, the whining was less and the shifting was slightly less clunky. Cheers,
Charlie

I think the gearbox is the biggest part of the defecit, or one of the greatest contributors to the "character" depending on how you look at it. The Guzzi 5 speed is a big improvement in terms of shift quality and noise. Speaking of noise, this thing whines like an old dump truck in top gear under acceleration. It is almost embarassing. Do you other guys running 4 speeds hear the same thing? I've heard that the 4 speeds are loud and clunky, but pretty much bullet-proof. What do you think? This bike is only showing 11,000 miles on the odo. I just put in 750ml of nice fresh BelRay gear lube. |
