"24th Annual Get Rained On In The Least Scenic Part Of WV Rally" |
Hey, compared to past years, the weather was near perfect. Of the 1100
miles we rode to get to New Cumberland and back (I rode an off brand,
and Kim rode her R80 g/s) we only got really rained on from Moundsville
to Wierton. We hit a light shower right at the Tennessee state line
coming home, but not enought to even warrant putting on the rain gear.
It rained a bit while we were asleep in the tent, but that was it.
We tried a new route coming up, taking highway 20 through the New River
area, and cruised through the cool little town of Hinton. Great road
and great scenery. We passed several clots of HDs headed to Rolling
Thunder, usually with a POW/MIA-flag-festooned sag wagon behind.
It looked pretty soggy Sunday morning, encouraging us to get packed up
early and hit Wicks. When we emerged, the sun was peeking through. We
took Ohio highway 7 all the way along the river to Huntington, WV, and
we seemed to be under the tail end of the front the entire way, with sun
just breaking through the low clouds, but no rain. I crossed my fingers
as we passed through Matamoras and the spot I dumped the Quota (in the
rain) two years ago.
We usually take two days to get home, but the weather cooperated and we
just pushed on and got home by 7:15 Sunday evening. All in all an
excellent Big Country rally. If next year is truly to be the last,
someone should have the 80s tune by the same name (and the band's name)
blasting!
