I fumbled around with the by-the-book method a bit then decided to try
using a device called a Colortune. Basically its a sparkplug with a
clear insulator so that you can see the color of the flame in the
cylinder. I got this to use on my MGB (little British car), but it
turns out that the MGB and the Eldo use the same heat range spark plug
so I thought I'd give the Colortune a try.
Basically it seemed to work quite well. I set the carbs to the point
where the flame changed from yellow (rich) to blue.
Then I balanced the carbs with a Twinmax (basically a differential
pressure gauge), but you need to have some ports to tap into your intake
manifold. That also worked well. (Carbstix do essentially the same
thing).
Colortune: about $40 (search the web).
Twinmax: I forget, but about $70.
