Jim,
Since there are no other threads going at this time I would like to indulge
a bit on your remark. (This is not about Loops, so anyone not interested can
delete now.)
Your observation is poinant. It points not only to the erosion of good will
amoung motorcyclists but also to the erosion of good will and manners in
society at large. I'm not so sure but that it is not out of a sense of
meaness that people passed you by or by a sense of "me-ness", you know that
self-centered view that grew out of the sixties (despite the Flower
Children's message). I think it is something stronger, something more
insideous than even manners. I think it is that people view others as just
an image, something there just like an image on a TV screen or a computer
video screen. We think, "yes there's something going on but nothing I can
get involved in". I think we are desensitized to the "relatedness" of
people near us. In part I think we are detached from each other by the
video-ness of our day and by the indulgences of our day. We 'see' so much
on the computer and TV and we can't possibly take part in all we see and
can't possibly care about all we see. I think we are turned off from all
the information in our lives because we can't deal with all of it. Also, we
are wrapped and insulated from life by our things, more so than ever. If we
can't consume it ( as a consumer should ) it is not worth our time. Or, "If
it's not on my schedule I can't get involved".
Your story happened to me also, once when I was stopped by the side of the
road on my Honda years ago and again when my car crapped out on me in a
parking lot. The people that really helped me both times were people who
weren't on a schedule. People who were in schedule passed me by. (I am
overstating this a bit here.) It's a pity but life used to happen to us and
now, somehow, we we have scheduled out the possibility that life could
happen to us. (I'm overstating again.) Any number ot guys could have
stopped to help you that day and each of you could have made friends,
learned something from one another etc. etc., but, they all had a
destination and it didn't include you. Pity. Bob

With what little tools I had with me, I figured that the 35 year old coil fails |
it gets hot. After little while I had spark again and rode home. The point of this is while I was pushing it to a location where I could |
on it and during the 30 minutes I was working on it, I was passed by probably a dozen motorcycles. Not a single one even slowed down, much |
asked if I needed help. What's up with that? It's not like a 50 year old clean cut guy is going to hurt someone. Years ago when I was more actively riding, nobody would EVER ride past another rider on the side of the road without asking if they needed help. Even now, if I see someone on a motorcycle on the side of the road, I stop and make sure everything is OK. Usually they are just streching or something but every now and then they have a problem and I can help. Am I the only one that does this anymore? What's happened to the Camaraderie?
