I wasn't trying to start a thread here but I guess I did. The signal wire is
the wire that I disconnected. I think that the tach was a rebuilt due to a
broken glass in the oridginal. (this was a few years back) I was getting
fuel spark and had checked the timing several times when I noticed that the
spark was week . I checked for continuity on all of the ignition wires,
swapped in a new coil, checked and rechecked the new points. Then I started
disconnecting anything I thought could affect the ignition. When I
disconnect the tach the engine started right up. I also had good
compression, don't remember the exact pressure but I did check it with a
comp. tester. At that time I ran only Amoco Premium (white gas). I don't
know the reason this worked, I can only suspect, Not being an electrical
wizzard. The spark should be a healthy blue not yellow. The fuel/air ratio
needs to be around 16 to 1, add compression and introduce the spark at the
right time and you should get fire. If I can get my current Eldo to run as
good as that one I will be extremely happy, my highway fuel mileage was in
the high 50s consistently, only spark nocked when lugged way down in high
gear, However the pipes were blue.
Hope this clears it up a little!!!

That makes two of us, however: There are three wires that go into the tach: Power, signal and ground. There should be a little (+) for the power-in which I believe is a blue/black wire, signal is a black wire and connects to the points. The ground is, um, another black wire. Check with a multimeter for continuity to the points on the signal wire, continuity to ground on the ground wire and 12 Volts with the bike turned on for the power. The bikes came with little round stickers on the back of the tach to aid connection. Sometimes they are still there!
