Tim,
Pulling the bearings and repacking them is easy and good preventative maintenance. When was the last time they were done?
I would recommend replacing the seals (about $8 each). Have a good look at the inner races for scoring and the bearings for the same. When you clean them be sure not to allow the bearing to spin if you blow them with compressed air.
When repacking follow the "Guzziology" method.
Bearings are no longer available but I believe Moto International has a kit that replaced the stock bearings with a more common type.
