Hi Kev,
As already stated, Hylomar is a good choice, though sometimes hard to find. I
bought mine from either Rovers North or Atlantic British (both of which are Land
Rover parts dealers) back when I had my '64 109 Series II. It's kind of messy to
use, but seals very well. Blue in color, comes in squeeze tube. Originally
developed I'm told for Rolls-Royce aircraft engines.
I've also used Yamabond #4 (I think) with good success. A little messy as well.
Non-drying and grey in color so it won't stand out like blue Hylomar. Easy to
find at your local Yamaha dealer. I think it's sold under other names as well.
The only thing that would completely seal vertically split crankcases on the
nasty old Japanese bikes I rode as a kid.
My personal favorite (and I believe Dave Richardson's as well) is Permatex 300
or Aviation Permatex which are both the same - different name. Easy to find,
usually at NAPA and such. Easy to apply and remove (with 2+2 Gum Cutter).
Non-drying so the part comes off easily if needed. Never had anything I sealed
with it leak (even plumbing in the house!). Comes in a small white bottle with
an application brush inside the cap.
Hope this helps. Cheers,
Charlie

I think the automotive industry stole it from area 51 way back when. I even have the chick tattooed, cute blonde pinup. As for torque specs, Tighten it till it snaps and back it off 1/2 turn, or I seem to remember I torqued the eldo to 10 - 15 ftlbs. Oh Yeh, Another excellent gasket goop is hylomar. Awesome blue crap that wont come off your fingers without a little work. hylomar never actually dies up, so it makes for easier cleaning when you go back in. I cleaned everything, checked for flaws in the mating surfaces and torqued the bolts in a criss cross pattern just the way it should be. The cover is now leaking again and it is driving me nuts. Does anyone do anything with the gaskets like coating them with sealant, grease or anything that they swear by? And what torque spec do those bolts get? I may have under done it in fear of stripping the main case but I don't think so. Any help or suggestions? Thanks, Rich |
