I finally managed to get my charging system problem fixed, after about
three weeks of on and off screwing around. It was really weird the way
things went. The thing would charge for a while, quit, and then charge
again. I tried three different regulators before I finally figured out
that it was the armature in the generator that was bad. Strangely
enough, the generator would work, but ONLY when the bike was cold.
For those of you who may or may not recall, I am using a generator from
a VW type III, cut down for use on my Ambo. I turns out that the thing
apparently did not have enough ventilation, and consequently burned up
the armature. I have revised the installation by adding ventilating
holes and a ring at the front of the gennie to help the stock Ambo fan
draw more air through to cool it. Gotta' wonder how they ever cooled the
generators on the VW type III? Did they use a duct or something?
Anyway, it looks like it will take another 3000 miles to see if the new
solution is going to work.
