Joe,
I believe the manifolds were the same on the old carbs but when they went to
the square slide 29's they had to modify the manifolds because the bottom of
the carb hit the bell housing as you saw.
I'm not totally sure but the manifolds should have a letter on them...."s"
for left and "d" for right.
If there are no letter indicating which is which you can tell the right side
manifold from the others because it has a greater radius of curvature.
Good luck....Ian

Subject: Carbs, intakes, long story
I'm helping a friend out with his early Ambassador: it's one of the early ones that is essentially a bored out V-700. It originally had SS-I carbs mounted, but when he brought it over it was sporting a set of 30 mm VHB square slides off of an 850T. He asked to have his carbs' intakes hooked up to the original air filter utilizing the original style rubber boot/plenum which he procured from MG Cycle. The carbs were wearing the original velocity stacks I presume were fitted to the SS-I carbs. I started out by just trying to fit the boot/plenum to the existing |
but things just don't seem to line up correctly-I suspected the bend of the 850T intakes were incorrect. The owner dug around and found the box containing the original intakes and SS-I carbs & intakes. First lesson I learned-the intakes on Ambo manifolds are a different bend than those used on the 850T, and the spigot that the carb slips onto is smaller in diameter on a 29 mm carb manifold than the 30 mm carb manifold. Next thing I noticed is that there is no perceivable difference between the l/h & r/h Ambo manifolds I have. OK, perhaps I have 2 l/h or 2 r/h, eh? Well, I'm not so sure. You see, I have another V700 in my garage I picked up last month. It' |
intakes are the same as the ones my buddy fished out of the box-o-parts; there is no apparent difference between the two (l/h & r/h). I can find no part numbers stamped/etched/cast into any of the manifolds. So I conclude that the loop frame intakes are common to both sides (doesn' |
make sense because the parts book I have-later Ambo- lists 2 unique part numbers), & I try to mount my 29mm VHBs using the intakes from my buddy's parts box and the velocity stacks that were originally fitted to this bike' |
SS-I carbs. No Dice! The float bowl on the r/h carb hits the 2 o'clock trans-to-engine bolt, and the rubber intake plenum stands off the air cleaner by about 1/2 inch. I'm really baffled here & I could use a little help. a) Are the l/h & r/h intakes on Ambos different from one another in more ways than part number? If so, could anyone help me identify which side I have 4 copies of? b) Is there a difference between the manifolds used on the SS-I and the VHB 29 mm carbs mounted on Ambos? c) Are there different shaped intake boots/plenums called out when using SS-I or VHB carbs? d) Was there a difference in air boxes or their mounting positions/battery trays between the V700/early Ambos with SS-I carbs and the later Ambos equipped with the VHB carbs? I'll take another look at Dave Otis' loopframe site and check out the on-line V700 parts book. Any help with the above questions would be appreciated-Thanks! Joe in St Louis |
