Terry>Take a look at the chrome bores and pistons. They are known to not like
sitting around for long times{16 years is a long time} without being run. What
happens is the chrome starts to blister from rust forming underneath. Now you
start it and the piston going up and down scrapes off the little blisters of
hard chrome which are then thrown around thru the motor-which doesnt have a oil
filter to catch these and other contaminents. The chrome flakes are now hurtling
thru the motor wrecking the close tolerances and the expensive internals. You
dont want to know how I know this.Check the bores first-before you start the
beast back up.You can source nos pistons and barrels for about $300-600.Its the
right thing to do for your Loop and for your piece of mind.............KO

I was frustrated that I could not find my fender supports. I can picture the scrapes on em. I can't figure what happened to them becuase I could swear I saw them recently. I also have no seat. I faintly remember my wife throwing it away a long time ago when cleaning the garage (grrrrr). My gas cap is kinda bent up, and I doubt it will go back on right. It's the hinged type with a lever to secure it. Anyone know if these are still available? The bike sat outside for a year or two without body parts on it before I got it in a garage. I'm wonderin if the generator is ok from the weather. Need most electrical stuff outside the headlight. Looks like most everything else is ok. Exhaust and crash bars have rust...so must ponder replacement vs. rechrome. Koni shocks look pretty rusty...any chance they are still good? Even found some extra NOS stuff that I will probably sell after I get the thing together. Some of it does not look like it goes with my model (brembo caliper seals?) or is for mods I don't plan to make (floor boards and frame sections from a later model police?). I also put a wrench to crank on the motor to see if it turns ok. It does. So, I don't plan to tear down the motor. I'm gonna go for the assembly and see if she kicks....if not...I'll just have to take it back apart. If it sounds like I'm makin any big mistakes, please give me some feedback. By the way, the thing was running when I took it apart to paint 16 or so years ago. Terry Scanlon 73 Eldo in a box. |
