I typically use 100 LL (low lead) octane avgas in my Laverda SF1.
It's a higher compression engine than the Guzzi, and likes the high
octane although it will run ok on the highest octane pump gas that I can
find when on long trips. I've also used it in my '68 Harley when I
suspected a batch of bad gas and the engine was detonating (pinging) and
overheating. Cleared it right up, and eliminated any other (more
expensive) problems that I suspected. For once a cheap fix! Sorry, Chris
I've used avgas for years with no detrimental effect. Burns nice and
clean.
I'm fortunate to live near a small regional airport that has a credit
card operated pump. Don't even have to talk to a human, although I fill
a bunch of 5- gal. cans, as they frown on filling vehicles from the
pump. If anyone asks, I'm going racing for the weekend so they don't get
their panties in a knot over road taxes, etc. I do get a kick out of it
when the pump asks for a tail number.
I've never had to retard the ignition when using 100LL, can't
understand why. I did have to set the idle up on the Harley slightly.
The higher the octane, the slower it burns, which causes it to 'push'
the piston through more of its stroke rather than slap it with a quick
explosion. That's why you get pinging on low octane gas.
