bob-
yeah, man! i ALWAYS use the highest octane gas possible in my bikes. may
not be neccessary, but the high priced stuff gives better ecomomy, has
additives that help keep the carbs clean, and like chris says- burns@ a
lower temp. [no-mo' pingin'!]
mine runs fine with the timing set to factory spec. even ran good @ the
static mark, just less power [right, ian?]
when you turn in the small screw [on the side of the carb], 1/4 turn @ a
time, the idle will slow down. back it out 1/4 turn @ a time 'till it picks
back up. that's where ya want it to be.
if you DO mess w/ the dist., you can tell if you're retarding the spark,
'cause the idle will drop off, but it ain't a good idea to do that- retarded
too far is as bad as advanced too far, for different reasons.
cheers!
andy

Andy,
Shoot!, I remember that damn sign in the window that said "we will be
closed..... " but I couldn't see the dates because the sun had curled the
paper and wasn't legible and all. Dang!! Anyway you musta had a good ride;
it was beautiful today. Well, I was planning on going to sport cycle this
weekend to see if they could check my bike again but I guess I'm on my own.
The bike has been running hot. I called Chris yesterday and I said I think
the carbs were too lean or it was pre-ignition (did I already talk to you
about this? sorry if I did). He confirmed that but asked me to try to fill
the tank up with 93 (or was that 97) octane; anyways high octane gas. He
said something about it being summer and all and that the bike runs cooler
on higher octane gas. I did see something about running high octane gas in
Guzziology. He said try this first and then try to retard the ignition,
mark distributor position first and then move counter-clock-wise. So that
what I'll do this weekend. I plan to drain low octane stuff out first, I
read that somewhere too but maybe that is just a pipe-dream. Best, Bob
