If it was a pre ignition problem wouldn't it make a noise on both cylinders?
Besides, "clack, clack, clack" don't sound like pinking to me.
Hope I'm wrong.

I had been living in the mountains when leaded premium went off the market
in Canada. The 700 kept on running fine with a couple less degrees of
timing. Then I rode it down to sea level one summer and the detonationwas
gawdawful because the higher air density caused the mixture to be a tadlower
leaner than it had been at 3000 feet. Rather than re-tune the engine for
altitude, I found enough aviation gas to get me back into the hills.Anyway,
it made nasty noises just like you describe. I couldn't put any load onthe
engine until the aviation gas went in.real
It could be you have a not-so-great batch of fuel. But, if the engine is
sensitive to fuel quality then look for some reason that it could berunning
lean or running with too much spark advance. Lean-ness could come fromthe RPM
a previous owner re-jetting the carbs to live in, say, Colorado. Too much
advance could come from the static setting being wrong, or weak mechanical
advance springs in the distributor would let it get too far advanced for
of the engine. And, of course the points hafta be gapped right for thetiming
to be what you think you set it at.pressure.

My Eldo was running horribly--amazing how much better it is with air in
the tires and properly adjusted valves. Just put a new Cali type
windshield on and it looks and runs great.
The problem is that it makes a nasty noise under load when hot. If you
are
starting out it goes clack clack clack from the left side. Also get a
hint of it if in a bit too low a gear going up a hill. Good oil
What could it be? Mains? It has a bit of oil coming out of the weep
hole--probabaly need to pull the engine and fix that one of these days
anyway. I also have a beautiful newly painted frame etc waiting in the
basement....
