Hi Keith,
If your referring to the engine and trans cases, there is no "seal" between
them. There is a seal at the rear of the crank and at the front of the trans
input shaft that could be leaking. Also the two lower bolts of the rear main
bearing flange need to be sealed in order to prevent leakage. Could also be the
rear cam bearing soft plug needs to be sealed. As for the stripped bolt (or
stud?), you may be able to fit a slightly longer one and get a bite on what
thread may be left in the hole. Otherwise, it sounds like eventually you'll
have to pull things apart and do an insert of some sort.

If your '71 still has the original 4-speed trans, you won't have to pull the
trans to replace the spring. I have no experience here, so I'll let someone who
does fill you in on the procedure.

Cheers,
Charlie

Upon another inspection, the oil is weeping out of the seal between the
cases, not through the vent hole or vent tube. Looks like the drivers
side bottom bolt on the case may be stripped and not torque-ing down,
just spins. This should not be since the Guzzi shop just did a bunch of
work to the tranny and had the engine/trans out.

In addition, was on the way to my auto mechanic with the Guzzi, he works
on bikes too -he is going to check into this whole gen light problem for
me. On the way to the shop, the gosh darn return spring on the shifter
must have busted again!! This is what started the whole deal with the
tranny problems several months ago. I noticed when doing a U-turn that
the heel-toe-shifter never came back up to center from the heel, so I
pushed the toe portion to center it and had to do this the rest of the
way to the shop in order to shift gears. Shifted fine outside of
manually having to bring the shifter back to center. I'm pretty pissed
about this as I was down to basically fixing the gen light ordeal and
doing nothing more than paint touch up for cosmetic purposes. Now I
have the gen light problem, an oil leak that I hope will not require the
engine and trans to be re-removed to fix a stripped bolt, not to mention
the possibility of taking the trans apart again to fix the busted return
spring! I told my mechanic to give Mark at MG Classics a ring - Mark,
think it was you that mentioned you don't have to remove the trans to
get to the return spring? Something about removing the rear plate and
putting her in 2nd gear? Will wait to hear from my mechanic with the
verdicts on all 3 of these problems. Just when you think you've got
everything all set up and ready to run, crap like this pops up. TELL ME
IT GETS BETTER THAN THIS, PLEASE!! I'm losing patience with Patience
(the name I have given this 71 Ambo) Quick! You may see her on e-bay
soon! Not sure how much more of this I can take! I want to ride, not
keep her in the shop all of the time!

OK, I'm off my soapbox now, thanx for listening......

I'd look at replacing the crankase vent valve. I just went ahead and
placed
the ball check valve in the crankcase.

You may not want to take this very lightly. I use to have a few drips
come
out of the breather tube after long rides and discounted it as a normal
thing. Well yesterday I was on a freeway on ramp just starting to come
up
to speed when the rear tire lost traction and slid to the left. These
things always seem to happen in slow motion but it seemed like the
throttle
was slow coming down and by the time it did I was in sever risk of high
siding if the tire had regained traction. I probably did the wrong
thing
and decided to apply more power so I would low side and the bike went
down.
I escaped with only a small amount of road rash on my belt line where my
jacket road up but the bike has lots of issues now. After I crashed and
looked back you could see a huge streak of oil before the crash
happened.
I'm not sure what went wrong but it appears to be coming from the small
left
hand tube. I really want to thank Frank who jump and gave up his time
to
help me try and find a way to get the bike home and please if you have
an
oil leak make sure there isn't an larger problem underneath. I'm not
the
worlds best rider but even with a good solid 10 years of riding
experience
this one happened a lot faster than I would have ever imagined
