Hello Listers! Glad to be back on line.

First let me sincerely apologize if I 'messed' up any of your computers with
the virus I contracted from the other Guzzi list. What a mess! It did indeed
send emails to everyone and everything in my address list ! I ran an
antivirus program several times, every time getting the all clear signal and
still it was there. Finally the computer crashed. After a rebuild of the
Hard drive and mucho work by the computer techs I had to hire it is ok. I
now have the latest version of macafee antivirus and run it constantly !

I just got on the road a 72 Eldorado Civilian model that I traded my 74
Police model for last fall. ( I got a Cali II and cash also). Fixed the
wiring problems, installed all the parts from the baskets the PO had kept it
in for a year and it is running.Po had bought new K&Ns, and New BUB mufflers
so it isn't too stock but will be a great rider. Needs some carb work, but
with repainted sidecovers, new decals ( it had none) and reflectors from
Harpers it looks good. Good enough to get second place People's Choice award
in the recent Oregon Vintage Motorcycle show in Corvalis. First place was a
complete restored "Nimbus" It was beautiful. Did have some strong
competition from several R69s and two Vincents ! It pays to be different.

Anyway I am glad to be back on the list and seeing how much it has grown
with all the new Loopers ! This is great ! Have a great summer and hope to
meet many of you at the National in July.

Chris,
I no longer use my Sigma, but at one time I had it mounted to my Eldo
successfully. I had the pick-up mounted to a short length of stainless
steel 3.4" square tubing, which was drilled and wire tied to the fender
tab
that mounts to the fork leg. I put the standard Sigma magnet on one of
the
spokes and lined it up and it worked fine. There are more powerful earth
magnets sold by Radio Shack that I bought but never used, as I was able to
get the pick-up and stock magnet close enough that they worked. Routed
the
length of wire up the left fork (wire tied) to the LED display, which I
had
mounted on the handlebar, between the bar clamps.

Zer and all-
I wanted to attach a bicycle speedo to my eldo too, but the ones
available

locally are not suitable. I was told of a brand called Sigma which may
work. My problem was that I could not get the sensor close enough to
the

magnet...usually they need to be 1-2 mm apart to work. The Sigma's
sensor

and magnet are supposed to work further apart, thus possibly
facilitating

mounting it on my loop. What brands have y'all who have done this used
and
how did ya mount it? I'd love to see exactly how fast I'm going!
Cheers!

As some may recall...I need to get my bike inspected. And because I
need
 to

 have a working speedo....

I worked up a couple solutions -
1) ask 'em stright out if I can run a bicycle speedo.

2) a BMW /5 speedo/tach cluster will fit and has the plugs for the
idiot

lights. And I think it will be reasonably accurate (2:1 drive which I
think

the veglia is as well.) the only problem here is that the idiot lights
on

the BMW are 2 wire. They each have their own hot and the Ambo uses a
common

hot with each light gronding at the instrument. This means I may have
to
 do

some weird wiring to make it work. Why go to the effort when a 30 buck
bike

speedo will work? This way I have a cluster that looks okay, works well
and

I don't have a big hole while the stock unit is rebuilt.

anything I missed?

I am assuming that the ratio in the speedo did not change between the
V7

 and
the ambassador

Greg,
I have the same mufflers on mine. They are quiet enough that you
certainly
do hear the valve noise. You should check your valves periodically to be
sure they are in proper adjustment, but I wouldn't be too concerned by the
clatter. If you are a rallygoer, or if you hang with any other loopframe
riders, listen to the valve noise from their bikes and compare it with
yours
to see if there is a noticeable difference.

I received my parts from Mark today and of course had to spend the night
installing them. After replacing the front break cable the bike finally
stops an order of magnitude better than the old 57 triumph the bike
replaced. I also fixed a few optional pieces of equipment like the
speedo

by replacing the drive cable. Best of all the old cheap and loud
mufflers

are replaced with wonderful stainless peashooters. This last
improvement

has opened a few concerns though. Now that I will actually be able to
hear a difference when the exhaust header nut falls out (although I have
frame clamps so this won't be an issue any more) there are a lot of new
noises. Over the carb noise caused by the K&N filters you can now hear
valve noise and gear noise. I assume the gear noise is from the timing
gears and being strait cut should be rather noisy but what is a "Normal"
amount of valve noise. I should adjust the tappets but if these motors
are typically ticky I don't want to tear into them.

Thanks in advance,

Greg

P.S. Not only does the bike run better with the new mufflers but also I
can now hear the girls scream as I ride by :)

Subject: 850 Engine Bearings

 Hello all.
I am rebuilding my 1972 850 Eldo engine.
Engine is now completely apart.
Crankshaft is going to shop today for grinding.
Questions:
1. Is it common to replace the crankshaft bearings in the flanges?
2. Do the flange bearings just press in and out? Do you need heat?
3. The Guzzi Manual uses "c/w" in text referring to the flanges and
crankshaft. What does c/w stand for?

I use a cheap "Trek" bicycle speedo that I solved the magnet mounting
problem by using "Shoe Goo" to glue a smaller but thicker magnet to the
wheel rim. It seems any magnet will trigger the unit - you don't have
to use the one supplied.

Stephen, unfortunately, the bearings are available
from Guzzi only WITH the flanges. If c/w is english

Hi Greg,
I don't hear much sound from my timing gears (I believe they are helical
cut)
but plenty of whining from the transmission when in 4th. The valves on my
old
'69 Ambo are barely noticeable at speed (with a full-faced helmet and
windshield), but a customer's Eldo I just finished doing a top-end rebuild
on
has quite a bit more noise. In his case the original rockers are worn
where
they contact the valve and the used set I put in have slightly worn
bushings.
Most Loopframes that haven't been rebuilt or otherwise "fettled" have a
little
more noise than the "T" and later bikes. In other words "these motors are
typically ticky". Better to hear the valves and know they have clearance,
than
to not hear them and burn a valve due to being too tight. Have fun!
Cheers,

Charlie

hear a difference when the exhaust header nut falls out (although I have
frame clamps so this won't be an issue any more) there are a lot of new

Greg
69 Ambo

P.S. Not only does the bike run better with the new mufflers but also I
can now hear the girls scream as I ride by :)

It is a characteristic of Loopframes, Greg, they sing to you!!
In the 70's, I glued half inch thick felt into the valve covers, and it
helped a little, but now I just enjoy it. Fairings and windshields do make
it worse.

Hi All,

I have two Ambos...a 69 and a 70. The 70 has about 500 miles on the new
engine.

The valve clatter on the 70 is a bit louder than on the 69 (with 30k on
the
engine). When I measured the valve clearances the 70 is loose on the
feeler
guage (I set intake 6 and exhaust 10). What I mean by that is that the
feeler guage makes contact but slides easily. On the 69 the feeler is a
bit
 tighter.

I'm not sure but do you think that the little differences noted would make
the difference in the clatter?

By the way...both bikes run tops.

Regards...Ian

Hi Greg,
I don't hear much sound from my timing gears (I believe they are helical
cut)
but plenty of whining from the transmission when in 4th. The valves on my
old
'69 Ambo are barely noticeable at speed (with a full-faced helmet and
windshield), but a customer's Eldo I just finished doing a top-end
rebuild
 on
has quite a bit more noise.

Have fun!
Cheers,

you could probably get a closer fit using a flat magnet on the edge of the

 Chris,
I no longer use my Sigma, but at one time I had it mounted to my Eldo
successfully. I had the pick-up mounted to a short length of stainless
steel 3.4" square tubing, which was drilled and wire tied to the fender
tab

the

spokes and lined it up and it worked fine. There are more powerful earth
magnets sold by Radio Shack that I bought but never used, as I was able
to

get the pick-up and stock magnet close enough that they worked. Routed
the

I use a cheap "Trek" bicycle speedo that I solved the magnet mounting

<jumping in> I didn't find a group 55. I did find a lawn tractor battery
that cranks at 230 cca. 25 bucks and has worked great so far. I cranked
the
snot out of it when I was setting the timing, trying to get the bike
started
and testing the resistance of my arm by holting the distributor cap.

GOt it at Wal Mart.

It should be noted that I am not using the old style round end battery
cables. I am using the bolt on flat terminal type. That may make a
difference.

As a suggestion, maybe you can try a lawn tractor shop.

I have become less and less imnpressed with the quality of folk employed
by
 sears.

PO put a 28 Amper in mine, but she was slow cranking. Per Mark at
MG

Classics and Cycle Garden, they use Group 55's, which is why I went
with

one. Was going to mail order one from Mark, but found out they are
difficult top ship due to the battery acid, so decided to look local
for

recommended

Fits tight and is tied down well, just took some effort to get it
