If an oil is rated 20w/50w it means it has the viscosity of a 20w so it
flows well, while having the lubrication properties of a 50w oil.

BTW I use 10w/40w semi synthetic, bought cheap from local VW franchise,
changed every 1000 miles. Synthetic oils are better at staying in grade if
they get hot, for instance a temperature unregulated air cooled engine
stationary in traffic on a hot day.

This as I understand works |
weights across the board within the range of 20w - 50w depending on the temperature. I really don't think you would want to run 5w/30 because of |
air cooled engine. The 5w/30 would end up thinning out too much when hot, therefore losing it's lubricating ability. -----Original Message----- From: Ian Adkins [mailto:adk-@gte.net] Sent: Monday, May 28, 2001 7:43 PM To: Loopframe Subject: oil viscosity ============================================================ Feeling blue about the state of your email inbox? I have always run Castrol 20W50 in my bikes and have nothing to complain about. But recently I started thinking about the type of oil that is going into the ol'birds and was wondering why such a heavy oil was used. I am currently looking at buying a new car and as I was browsing the |
manual and it said recommended oil was 5W30. Now I can understand that for |
2001 4 banger but that same grade is recommended in my 70 Pontiac with a 8 cylinder 350 engine. Would it not be better to run the 5W30 in the bike too? Just curious and thanks for the time to input your thoughts. Regards....Ian p.s. just to remind you all....the Western NY Rally is only a little over two weeks away! |
