Rick,
The mounting rubber on the K&N's has a bend. It is possible that you have
them turned so that instead of curving to the center of the bike they curve
outwards.
By the way...if you use a garden tractor battery you may get away with
keeping the filters like they are.

like they protrude into the battery area. My battery is in my sidecar. I
