Well today, Friday was my day for going down to Laughlin for the =
annual River Run, otherwise known as the "HD Mutual Admiration Society =
Annual Event". It was a beautiful day, if a bit humid in Laughlin, due =
to the river. I left about 8am, hit Burger King for breakfast, and =
headed south. The highway was thick with Harley's, as many heading into =
Las Vegas as heading out to Laughlin. I just tagged along behind a =
couple of guys who held a comfortable pace, and made good time. I took =
the Ambo, as I like to show off how good an old Guzzi is.
There were the usual 8-10 "swap meet" type areas. Each major casino =
has one in their front parking area. Due to the heat, I moved the bike =
along from area to area, so as not to have to walk all the away back to =
the beginning. Of course it is primarily aimed at Harley riders, as far =
as the custom stuff, but there are the generic vendors selling leathers =
at great prices, jewelry, tattoos, patches, booze, etc.
I think Moto Guzzi is foolish to ignore this event. All the major =
manufactureres had bikes to look at, and the Guzzi cruisers would have =
fit right in. The Victory people even were doing group demo rides. Guzzi =
could use some exposure like that.
The only other Guzzi I saw was in a booth where a young fellow was =
pinstriping helmets. He said the bike was a customer's bike that he had =
donme somne striping on. It was a butterscotch colored Bassa or Jackal, =
not sure which. If the owner is on the list, maybe he can pass on the =
guys info - he did nice work. I only saw one Harley older than my Ambo - =
some old codger on a panhead that was all original. Saw lots of what the =
British call "wobblers" - riders who obviously could barely ride.
Of course, I took advantage of the many buffets there to have lunch! =
After a bit more hiking, I crossed the river to Arizona (Bullhead City) =
to fill up, since AZ gas is way better than Nevada gas. After that, I =
headed home. The trip home was uneventful for me, but unfortunately, not =
for a couple of guys on a Harley who had a head on with a car on the =
highway. The traffic was badly backed up in both directions, and when we =
got to go, it was a somber sight to see the two sheet covered bodies =
lying in the ditch, next to a mangled bike. Makes me glad I am a devout =
chicken.
