Don,
I read "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" (Robert Pirsig) 25 years
ago and I just happen to be reading it again now. I also just read
"Rebuilding the Indian" by Fred Haefele.
These are two different motorcycle books. I think all loopframers would
like Haefeles' book as we could all find some comparisons to our own
troubles in rebuilding loopframes.
Pirsigs' book is another story. (Pirsig was a student of an Aristotelian
scholar; either Ross or Mckenon, can't remember which.) If you have had
some philosophy training, as I have, this book is an easier read but he does
write for a general audience and covers some very deep, academic topics in a
clear manner - I think. He also clarifies general motorcycle maintenance
and does so by helping us understand our preconcieved notions about how
things work in general. He is especially good at challenging our
assumptions about 'why is my bike doing this?' and 'what is wrong with my
bike?' by goading us to ask 'why am I thinking this?' and 'what is wrong
with my thinking?'. If you don't care to be "one with your bike" or "at one
with motorcycling" , even in a mild sense, this book is not for you. I
think his book is good for people who don't mind examining themselves before
examining their bikes. Pirsig also points out some emotional challenges in
motorcylcling with your buddies, which is a tedious read at times but if you
can get through it this may be helpful in the future or at least give you
some understanding about pairs/group riding. (I only wish that reading this
book made me solve my motorcycle problems well - I still struggle.)
So anyway, I think you can see I endorse this book. You may want to get a
copy and read some of it and skip through the parts that most people refer
to as 'crap'. Sift out the stuff that is good for you. Best, Bob Hawkes
