Pete,
Doesn't the regulator have a ground wire? Mine does and I run it over to the
fender and ground it there.
Sparks eh? I've heard of a few Loopframes that have burnt up... likely
attributed to a bad ground and leaky petcocks.
Yesterday, I also started my friend's 72 Eldo (I was storing it here for the
winter). It sat all winter and when I tried to start it it wouldn't even
turn over. Lots of juice in the battery and current to the starter. Seems
the problem was in the starter button. When I put the volt meter on it I had
a reading of 12V on both sides of the starter button. Didn't make sense to
me.
Anyways....instead of taking everyting apart I just ran a shunt from the
starter solenoid (at the starter) to the positive of the battery. The thing
turned over. So...I flipped on the fuel....touched the wire and after a few
turns the bike started right up. Rode it around the block a few times.
Sweet.
It was my first time on an 850. Kind of interesting to ride this bike. I
like the 5 speed tranny. Power seems to be a little more but I won't get a
chance to feel the real difference till I can get her out on the highway.
Today....if the Weather Gods allow :-)
I need to get my 70 Ambo licenced too. I can't use my Scooter (76 Convert)
plate all the time :-)
Regards...Ian

Ian It was good to read your message the day after I fired my 71 up yesterday After much adjusting and lubing and generally getting into riding |
I fired it last night in the garage. After 2-3 revs it started right up too. Only I had a surprise when I saw sparks coming from around the battery area. After shutting down, I couldn't imagine where it was shorting out. Tried again and then I saw it was from one of the voltage Reg terminals. I had overlooked a little clip that fell behind the regulator and made a shorter path to ground. I then realized that the Reg base shouldn't be grounded. Its a replacement done by PO. I have it set where it wont arc but I plan to isolate it from ground in the near future just to be thorough. Next is getting the plate, but I count seem to lift a tracing off the VIN. I'll have to take it to a notary. I'll need to drive to the office so they can witness the #21205 Glad to hear you are thawing out Pete |
