Rick,
I'm not sure what to make of your cure of touching a positive lead to
both the distributor and line sides of the coil. If you went to the
distributor side I'd be surprised if you didn't blow a fuse (provided
you had one in the jumper you used) or smoke the points, unless you
lucked out and they were open when you did it. Sounds to me like you
have an intermittent connection in the keyswitch or the ignition
circuit, or pitted points maybe?
