Once you mentioned the side boxes, I had an epiphany in remembering what I
did for those locks. Indeed a BMW dealership can provide the key blanks to
fit the side covers. I took the Locks off the covers and removed the
cylinder from the tumbler (or is it the other way around). Be very careful
as there are tiny little springs and pins in there. I marked the positions
of the pins on the blank and then filed away the blank under each pin until
they were flush with the cylinder when the key is in. Slope the spaces
between the pin landings and voila, I made the key.
I just checked the sidebox key in the steering lock. Same blank but
it is either keyed differently or just worn less than the other cylinders
