Et tu Johann?

Just as I was thinking that it was only me! Cheer up, I took apart the
rear drive for my Ambo last week only to fine that water had gotten into
it. Combined with sitting for 20 years it managed to eat all of the
bearings. Fortunately, the ring and pinion seem to have been spared. Oh
well, its only money, but I do wish that my Guzzi project/kit bike did
have all the parts in a re-usable condition.

I removed the tires from the rims the week before and found out that not
only did the wheels not have stainless spokes, one of the wheels was
also spread apart on one side where a previous owner must have run it
into a curb or something. So now I have an excuse to buy new, wider rims
and to further deplete my cash reserves.

Twenty years and water also took their toll on one of the transmission
bearings, but that has only increased my resolve to find a way to put an
o-ring in the housing for the shifter shaft.

I suppose that I could (or even should) be discouraged, but when I am I
just say to myself with my best Italian accent, "You gotta suffa a bit
to looka so good!". Then I get on with the next phase of my restoration
project. Hey, at least I'm not bored!

 Hi,

My V7 Special (=Ambo) caused me a lot of headache early last year with a
broken gear box cush spring and in autumn I had a cracked cam gear at
highway speed. Luckily, just one valve was bent, but nevertheless
troublesome to experience both within short period of time.

This year I committed myself to a pre-season check on the u-joint of the
Mille GT. Started Saturday by pushing the rubber hose away and spotting
what's the inside look like. Turned out to be not tidy and so I removed
swing arm and joint.

Joint was ok, and so I proceeded to the joint support bearing by
inspecting it with my fingers. He, what's this inner ring surface? And
it does not turn smoothly. Further examination and disassembly showed,
that the inner ring is broken FOUR times! Guess I was lucky to find this
prior to an excessive damage.

But even the pinion bearing had excessive play (axial .26mm) and the
pinion tooth surfaces are awesome. I intend to fix the play and continue
with the pinion, but check it e.g. with each new tire.

So, why always me? It keeps me really busy to keep both Guzzis alive and
this is getting boring. A minor fix every now and then would be ok, but
the working hours and money I spent within a year is really on the limit
by now!

Which troubles did you experience so far?

ciao
