Pete,

There are several reasons that I can think of for switching, none of
which imply that every member of the list ought to run out and find a VW
genny to put on their looper.

1) Capacity. The foremost reason would be the 30 amp capacity of the
Bosch unit compared to the original 20-25 of the OEM model.

2) Price. A rebuilt Bosch/VW unit goes for about $60, (plus a core
charge, if you don't have one to exchange).

3) Availability of parts.

4) Availability of repair facilities.

5) Cheap regulators. $10-35 vs. $45-115


Of course, the downside is that in order to get the thing to fit (right)
you will have to do/have done some machining. Is it worth the effort?
Heck, idunno'. I just enjoy a challenge once in a while.
