Subject: To lap or grind that is the question

Dave Richardson in Guzziology recommends grinding the valves whenever the
heads are apart. This amounts to about 2 grinds and then your replacing
valves. In my winter boredom/engine evaluation I have my heads apart. So my
46K Ambo's intake valves look fine and the exhaust, as to be expected,
looks,,,, well like I should go ahead and grind it along with the seat
carefully at 45 degrees. The guides are within spec. Not that the exhaust
valves are burnt or bad or anything but as Dave writes they are probably at
70% efficiency and could be at 95% after grinding as opposed to maybe 80%
after lapping. I really don't want to mess with the intakes, outside of
lapping in the seat with fine compound, as they appear just fine. So the
question is should I, while I have it apart, go ahead and grind the exhaust
valves and seats? Or should I just 'Lap' both the intake and exhaust valves
and seats in and call it even until major rebuild time, when I need pistons
and cylinders? Or grind both intakes and exhaust and not worry about it again
until I need to replace the guides? I know it's a tough call and I would
actually prefer to just put it back together and run it till I have good
cause to actually perform the work. Anyway who has 'been there, done that'
and have any feelings on the subject.
