I've been following this thread, and there are a couple of things I haven't
seen mentioned.
The front brake cable lasts a long time, and may seem to work fine, but new
cables are lined, and make a substantial difference. The old cables have so
much internal friction, that only a small portion of your "Gorilla Grip"
gets to the shoes.
So, if the cable is a few years old, install a new one, and be amazed at the
improvement!
Also, the cams that operate the shoes are longer than necessary, which
reduces leverage. Remove the cams, and shorten each lobe about 3/16".
Grind the shortened lobe smooth and rounded, like the original.
Reground cams - plus a new cable - plus all pivot points lubricated - plus
good arc-ground shoes, will allow you to squeal the front tire!
When I first did all this on an old BMW, I very nearly went over the bars at
the end of my driveway!
