The other area to check is the Generator bracket. The bolts tend to break
with all the vibration. Could be that.

My father had a 74 Eldo that had a similar noise. After checking the top
end we removed the timing cover and discovered it was the timing chain.
The tensioner had gone bad and the chain was slapping around at low rpms.

It's common problem on the Eldorado is the tensioner going bad. What's
worse
is that it can shred into little pieces and get into the oiling system.

It's not a problem on the Ambassadors since they have timing gears and not
chains.
Sometimes the generator belt cover can be the problem. If it is not
installed
properly or if the belt is getting too loose, it can periodically make
contact. Pull the belt cover off and look on the inside of it for black
powder. This would indicated that the belt is rubbing.

Cheers,

Dave

My Ambassador arrived to me without a tool kit. No big deal as I had
a bunch of cheap (but functional) tools laying around that I packed up for
roadside emergencies. My problem is that I need a lock ring spanner for
the
exhaust nuts, steering head, etc. I have been unable to find what I am
looking for by doing searches on the net. Looks like as close to what I am
looking for is found in bicycle shops to be used on bottom brackets. I am
looking for a somewhat heavier duty one than that. I borrowed one from my
neighbor before I was about to take a hammer and punch to the exhaust
nuts,
but want to purchase one of my own. I don't remember ever seeing one for
sale in tool sections of local hardware or tool type stores. Any
suggestions?

The best tool for those big lockrings is a fire hose spanner. If you can't
find a supply near you, try:

www.galls.com

They sell Police and Firefighting stuff. For about ten bucks you can get a
folding one.

Rich...

I recently went through the same ordeal. You can use an adjustable
spanner
wrench sold by Proto tools available at some auto parts stores. You can
check with Harbour Freight, Northern Tools, plumbing shop, etc for an
adjustable spanner wrench or C- spanner. I bought mine at harbout freight
for less than 15.00 and it worked fine.

How about a cracked generator cover housing?
Mine did that on a cross country trip and made horrible noises at specific
rpms. Harmonic mulitplication. I thought it was curtains for the motor.
Eventually I figured it out, used pliers to yank out bits of it on the
side
of the road and silent for the remainder of the trip.
