I took the cheep Taiwanese tire - a Cheng Shin C289 -
off the rear of my Goose yesterday. It had 8,000 miles
on it. The center groove was warn pretty smooth, but
still I think 8k is pretty good for such an
inexpensive tire. I have the same tire on the front,
and it is holding out much better, as expected.
These are safety-bead tires, 4-ply, 700-something
pounds of load each, uni-directional tread. I never
had any problems with it at all, good traction wet or
dry. They are not as convex as some tires, so are not
good for sport bikes, but work fine for my antique and
my relaxed riding style. And I should add that a few
of those miles are with a Velorex sidecar attached.
I recommend these to anyone who wants an inexpensive
but reliable tire in the stock configuration (4x18).
Unfortunately they are not available in 4.5", so this
time I am trying a 4.5" C199, another Cheng Shin tire.
