Hey Tom,

I believe that the crank is bullet proof. I think that the shell bearings
are designed to fail before the crank so I would think that all that is
needed is new bearings. However, I would mic it first to be sure.

The big question is why did the half shell fail?

Regards...Ian

Subject: munched con rod bearing.

Hi all,

Last sat., I helped a friend diagnose the nock in his 74 Eldo's engine.
I pulled off the head and cylinder to find them in good shape. then I
grabbed ahold of the piston and conrod and pulled up and down.(insert
grimace here). we then drained the oil and took off the oil pan to find
some nasty pieces of metal down there. We laid the bike over on it's
side and undid the cap bolts and pulled the piston out.

the conrod bearings are scored alittle, but the one on the crankshaft
was toasted.

Here is my question. The engine was not run after the nock was detected.
The crank 'feels' good. What is the probability of the crank being out
of round? Can we just mike it, and throw in some new bearings if it is
within .003 or.005 of spec?

Thanks.
