Boy, I love the oil thread, every time it runs.
As someone else already alluded, motorcycle-specific
oils were designed for the special needs of cycles
wherein the transmission gears and the engine share
the same oil. Some also have additives that take wet
clutches into account. Bikes like Guzzis, Beemers, and
Hogs, which have "pre-unit" engine/transmission
set-ups, don't need these expensive additives.
I use Havoline in my Amob, because I can get it cheap,
which facilitates changing it every 1000 miles. I
change it that often because there is no oil filter. I
use 10w40 most of the year, but 20w50 in the summer.
I have been using 80w90 hypoid gear oil from Central
Tractor in my tranny and final, with a little molly
additive that I got from Moto Int. Someone posted a
while back saying that he have switched to synthetic
85-1?0 and his trans shifts much smoother, and I am
going to try this when the jug of tractor syrup runs
out.
