My '71 Ambo is acting funny so I thought I'd ask for some advice
here. I tuned it up today as it was running rough, and found the
distributor was full of dirt/trash. I took out the points, the plate they
sit on, and cleaned it up as well as I could with Q-tips.
Reassembled, using some Tri-Flow on the cam where it rubs on
the point thingy to open the points. Took it for a ride, and it ran fine
for five minutes, then just died. Pulled off and started looking
around, paying special attention to the points and distributor. The
starter turned the engine over very easily (normally it just barely
turns it over, but it always starts), which was surprising, and I didn't
see any spark at the point gap. Well, I took the rotor cap off, and
and played around for awhile, and then tried it again, and the
engine suddenly had the heavy feel it normally does, and it started.
I rode it awhile, it ran well, but then started sputtering again.
Seemed like it was running out of gas, so I went to reserve. Finally
started running better, only after emitting a large backfire. Ran
poorly the rest of the way home. Any ideas? TIA,

Don Ivey
