The Ambo in Absecon NJ is sold, I bought it!!

Sounds like this guy is tring to hide something. I'd walk away or tell
the guy your bringing a mechanic friend and a battery to check it all
out. If he balks, tell him to find another buyer! I picked mine up for
$1300, mechanically sound, just needs some cosmetic TLC, mostly elbow
grease to polish everything up and some chrome replacement (mirrors,
grab rails, exhaust). Other than that, I'll put on some new tires -
think the originals are still on it, lots of tread but dry rotted. So
for about $2300, it's all said and done. From what I have heard, these
machines are worth $3000 and up IF they are in good mechanical and
cosmetic shape.

Good luck!

mufflers.
Has double disc., 17000 miles, tool kit owners manual. Tires with 2500

new timing chain all seals . Nice runner Selling since I bought an SP
111.

Also an Ambo in absecon NJ, running for 1900

tell the guy for 3000 you will pass

Subject: Police Ambo

I was thinking about this discussion over dinner, and
thought there might be another legitimate perspective
on this bike. I put more then $2000 into my Ambo
getting it back on the road, all parts, no labor (did
everything myself). So $3000 for a bike that
(probably) needs so little doesn't seem bad to me
(though if I were in CA I'd take Mark's for $3500
instead, of course). That the guy doesn't want to
bother with a mechanical inspection could be
attributed to his feeling that he has a really nice
and clean antique, and that he doesn't want to waste
time haggling with someone who doesn't appreciate it.
I would understand that completely, if it is true
(which is hard to know of course). That the fork seals
may need replacing is reasonable: any rubber parts
loose their elasticity after 30 years. If the bike is
all there, I think it may be worth considering -
Police Ambo's are neat and unusual. And I really like
Ambo's.

Of course, the carbs may need cleaning, and all rubber
parts will probably need replacing in a few years. Age
does that, even at low miles.

Perhaps if one were to show up with $2700 or so in
greenbacks, the guy would turn out to be
price-flexible.

Subject: Viva Las Vegas report/ long

I left work on friday at 3pm and headed north of Phoenix with the Eldo
in the back of my truck. I found a campsite just south of Flagstaff,AZ.,
and put up the tent by 7:0pm. Luckily, I met another Cardinals fan here
that had a campsite, so I just put in with him.

I unloaded the Eldo early Sat. morn, and was on the road to vegas by
8:00am. I got to Hoover dam at noon like I thought, but what I didn't
count on was it being 120*! It was deathly hot! I didn't find anybody
waiting for me, so I went ahead and went to Vegas. I figured if I was
gonna have a heat stroke, I was going to do it where there was medical
assistance available!

I got into town and went into the Sam's Town casino and hotel. Man, was
it nice and cool in there. I got on the phone, and called fellow lister
Tim Crump who was instrumental in getting me situated in Vegas! I was
completely lost, and Tim came thru 'BIG TIME'!

Tim took me over to fellow lister Bill Arbour's house. Bill is a great
guy who put me up in his house for a coupla days. Bill took me down to
the 'strip' and to 'down town' to see all the sights. Man, has Vegas
changed since the last time I was there.!

I had breakfast with Tim and Bill on Sunday morn, and then Tim and I
took a ride to 'Red Rock". It's a really cool loop of 13 miles that
wanders thru a Grand Canyonesque terraine. Very impressive. About one
mile before the exit, I saw a car parked on the right hand side of the
road, so I moved over to the left side. Then I saw this wild burro
starting to cross the hiway towards the car, looking for a hand out. I
had to grab lots of brakes and skidded inbetween the car and the burro.
Scary!. Tim said that costs extra, but wouldn't mention it to the gate
guard!

I left Vegas this morn at about 7:00 am, and returned here to Flag about
12:30. A good trip on the Eldo. I guess about 600 miles round trip.

Well, I need to go and put on some skin lotion, and the folks here at
the NAU library are looking at me kind of suspisously.(too old to be a
student). Gotta go!

Bye!

I've thought about it from your perspective as well, and it is certainly a
possibility. The part of me that thinks it suspicious that he won't let
me
bring a mechanic over just seems to be winning. The fact is, it is a
beautiful bike. I've been really upset since then that things didn't work
out. More importantly, I just don't have the money to risk. I realize
buying any used vehicle is a risk. But the risk is more of a calculated
one
when the vehicle is running. If I gave him $3000 and then found it needed
another $2000 or $1500, it would end up sitting in my garage fo a long
time.
 Bummer.

doni-
you're right. while a low mileage lapd is a heck of a find, his lack of
cooroperation is disconcerting. i know fron experience that it's BAD for
an
old guzzi to sit too long, although 2 years might be ok.
the most important thing to do is a compression check. if there's any
less
than 160lbs. per side [and, needless to say, both sides should be close to
the same], then it will need a top-end job. see, the older bikes used a
chrome-plating in the cylinders. i found most of mine laying in the
oilpan.
 [mine sat for 16 years].
look for obvious stuff, like oil-leaks, etc. the forks & brakes are real
simple to fix up. i would say look at the bike, and if it speaks to your
heart, and you have the greens, go for it! if you are looking for an old
loopframe [ambo-eldo], they are around. usually, not too cheap, though.

A word of caution: I overhauled an Eldo a few years ago that had 165psi in
both cylinders. On dismantling I found plating was completely shot, mostly
above the ring swept area, but a write off anyhow.
