This ball is between the transmission's output shaft and the speedometer drive gear that fits onto the output shaft. It keys the gear to the shaft such that they rotate in unison.

Thanks to Jim Pissot for sending me this information via email. In Jim's own words:

Since [I] took my gearbox apart some time ago, my recent inventory found the ball for the speedo worm drive had gone missing. My auto parts guy (don't EVER ask a parts man if he has tiny balls) recommended I try the local bike shop. Sure enough, they stocked bearing balls of all sizes. The worm drive is secured by a 4 mm or 532 inch ball. Most of the how-tos warn you NOT to lose the ball; none suggest how to replace the damn thing. Not too hard at all; and you don't have to wait 2 weeks for delivery!
